Suomesta japaniski.

I'd like to understand a text I took from wikipedia in Japanese.

Here are the kanji's which I understood fully:
The first one (間) means time or space I believe (with the reading ま, ma)
The second one (月) is moon or month with the reading gatsu/getsu or tsuki ?
The third one (中) is something like middle (chuu?).
Then there's (日) which means sun and it seems it can be pronounced (hi)goro.
The fifth one is (言) is present in the word (語) which is attached to words to creat languages and is pronounced go. Alone it means say or something related to that and is pronounced toki.
The sixth one is (駐) has the left part present in the work eki (駅). However, I don't know what it means - it seems to be related to somekind of transportation (horse (ta) originally - 馬).

I looked (相) because it appeared alot. Apparently it means together and is pronounced ai.
I also looked (期) up because it appeared often. It means look forward to and seems to be pronounced (kisu?).
Finally I looked (制) because it also appeared alot. It means system and is pronounced (sei?).

国防

徴兵制。18歳以上の男子に対してのみ強制されている。女子は免除されている。兵役期間は6～12ヵ月。 冷戦期に中曽根首相（当時）が「国防努力を怠ればフィンランドのようになる」と国会で発言して、当時の駐日フィンランド大使が遺憾の意を表明した。

I can read the hiragana quite well but there are too many kanji's I don't understand (in red). Some I can understand the meaning vaguely.

Since I looked up (国防), I can guess it seems to be talking about the country's defence or perhaps army(the first one meaning country and the second something related to defence?). Although I don't understand at all. Not on my secon day!
